Creating a lasting tribute to a loved one is a meaningful way to honor their memory. Memorial benches offer a special place for you and others to reflect in our beautiful parks and open spaces.
This page has all the information you need to apply for a memorial bench. It covers choosing a location, understanding the process, and reviewing costs and timelines. We hope this guide is helpful as you consider this special dedication.
Memorial benches can be placed in many of our council parks and open spaces. They are a way to remember a loved one or to make a dedication of your choice.
There are many locations available across the district. If you have a particular location in mind, please submit the application form. We will then consider your request. Please be aware that we are not currently able to accept applications to place benches in the following locations:
- Westgate Seafront – Epple Bay to St Mildreds Bay
- The Ridings, Palm Bay Seafront – Friends Gap to Botany Rd
- Broadstairs Seafront – Dickens Rd to Seapoint Rd
Please note: the burial of ashes under memorial benches is not allowed. This is for legal reasons.

To meet our safety and insurance rules, your memorial bench must be:
- Commercial standard: It must be built to last safely in a public space. We cannot accept homemade or flat-pack benches.
- Matching the local style: Your bench must blend in with the look of the benches already installed in that specific area.
Where to buy your bench
We do not provide memorial benches ourselves. However, we recommend using a supplier called Streetmaster.
- Recommended bench: We recommend asking for their Cavendish 1800 Iroko (planed and sanded) bench.
- Estimated cost: A bench from Streetmaster costs around £1,400. The exact price will depend on the finish and the type of plaque or inscription you choose.

Important – application approval
Please do not order or pay for a bench until we have officially approved your application and agreed on the final location with you.
Delivery address
If your application is successful, please ask the supplier to deliver the bench (along with all the fixings) directly to our depot:

You can apply for a bench at any time.
Just complete the application form. Please be sure to complete all the fields and provide as much information as you can.

PermalinkYou will get a response to your application within 30 working days.
If your application is approved, benches are usually installed within 12 to 16 weeks. This depends on how long the delivery takes.
Once the bench is installed, customers should note that they are responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep.
Customers can choose to maintain the bench themselves, use a professional contractor or they can contact the TDC Minor Works department who offer a simple refurbishment service (sand & stain).

Update to installation charges
Please note that our installation costs changed for all applications received from 1 March 2026. The new prices are:
- Seafront (on grass): £333.33 + VAT. This includes a concrete base, which is required.
- Park (on grass): £250.00 + VAT. This includes a concrete base, which is required.
- Seafront or park (on an existing hard surface): £126.67 + VAT.
You will be invoiced after the bench has been installed.
