Applications for seasonal business opportunities on Thanet’s beaches and bays are now open for 2026.
Following a successful pilot programme in 2025, the council is expanding the seasonal scheme to encourage a range of local enterprises to serve the coastline. These could range from ice cream trikes or coffee vans to yoga classes. The aim is to encourage operators who will enhance the beach experience for both residents and visitors.
Based on feedback from last year’s pilot, there are several changes to the scheme. This includes a new ‘zoned’ pricing structure, with fees proportionate to the location. Prime spots Margate Main Sands and Ramsgate fall into Zone 1. Quieter bays such as Minnis Bay and Stone Bay are in Zone 2. Smaller bays, including Epple Bay and Dumpton Gap, fall in Zone 3, offering more affordable options for smaller ventures.
Councillor Ruth Duckworth, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Property, said: “Our coastline is the jewel in Thanet’s crown, and we want to see it thrive with a vibrant mix of high-quality local businesses. The pilot programme showed us just how much value these traders add to our beaches, providing everything from wellness treatments to delicious local food.
“We have listened to the feedback from our first year. By introducing zoned pricing and launching the application process earlier, we are making it easier for entrepreneurs to plan ahead. We are particularly keen to hear from businesses that share our commitment to the environment, as protecting our natural coastal beauty remains our top priority.”
Existing licence holders who took part in the 2025 pilot can reapply during a priority window. New licences will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to approvals.
Sustainability is a core requirement for all successful applicants. Prospective operators must respect the district-wide ban on single-use plastics. They must also have clear plans for waste management and recycling.
Full details on available locations, the new fee structure, and the application process are available on the council’s website. The deadline for all applications is Friday 13 March 2026.
