Thanet District Council’s building control team works with homeowners, builders, and architects to make sure construction work meets national building regulations and safety standards.
We work alongside other council departments to assess and support all types of domestic and commercial development across the district.
What our building control service does
Our building control team provides:
- Plan checking: we review your architectural drawings and specifications before work begins to make sure they meet structural, fire safety, and energy efficiency rules
- Site inspections: our building control surveyors visit your property at key construction stages to inspect the work in person
- Completion certificates: once work is finished and complies with regulations, we issue an official completion certificate and store the permanent records you need to sell or remortgage your property
- 24/7 dangerous structure response: our statutory duties are to ensure that buildings are safe and they are not a risk to the public. This includes unstable walls, damaged roofs, and collapsing structures.
Important: If you are a property owner and your building or boundary wall shows signs of movement, cracking, or damage, you must contact your property insurance provider and appoint a private structural engineer or chartered surveyor to inspect it. The council’s building control team only investigates damage where a structure poses an immediate danger to public safety.
