Parking suspensions

You can use the online form to request a parking suspension.

Please ensure you have read the guidance below before beginning the form.

A suspension prohibits parking for vehicles in a particular parking place. The suspension temporarily removes the parking regulations in place and prevents parking of unauthorised vehicles.

These suspensions are in any restricted bays covered by the Traffic Regulation Order and can be on and off street.

A yellow board detailing the dates and reason for the suspension will be erected at the place where the suspension will be in place. This will be in place approximately five working days before the suspension is due to take place to advertise to motorists of the upcoming suspension.

In cases of an emergency such as utility works, these will be processed accordingly.

While the suspension is in place if cones or barriers are required it is the responsibility of the contractor to place these. Thanet District Council does not provide these for suspended areas.

A suspension can also be applied for to guarantee a parking space, e.g. for removals vehicles. This will suspend parking for other motorists, but will allow parking for the removal vehicle, as the reason for the suspension.

When will a Suspension be issued?

  • Traffic movement and safety
  • Essential building/ maintenance work
  • Furniture removals
  • Filming
  • Special events
  • Weddings or funerals

Applying for a Suspension

All applications need to be submitted via our online application form. Applications should be received no later than 14 working days before the required date of the suspension (except in emergencies). This will enable the Council to conduct any site visits and advertise the suspension appropriately.

The price will be agreed before a suspension is finalised and a purchase order must be supplied for an invoice to be raised.

A suspension prevents motorists parking within the suspended area, however the applicant can park within the suspended bay.

A suspension can be extended where necessary, however at least five working days notice needs to be given to enable the Council to take any appropriate action to indicate the continuance of the suspension. Further costs will need to be agreed before the suspension is suspended.

Please note the council is unable to suspend any unrestricted bays.

How much do they cost?

Charges per suspension are:

  • One off charge of £110 per application or change
  • Any pay and display bay will be charged the hourly rate for the bay suspension.
  • Any time limited bays will be charged at £11 per bay per day
