Thanet District Council appoints world-class builders for flagship £1.1m Margate skatepark

Thanet District Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Betongpark Limited as the official contractor for the highly anticipated redevelopment of the Margate skatepark.

Following a competitive tender process launched in September 2025, Betongpark emerged as the successful firm to lead the £1.1 million project. As one of Europe’s leading skatepark design and construction specialists, they bring years of experience in creating modern, durable, and inclusive urban spaces as well as high-profile restoration projects.

The transformation will result in a state-of-the-art concrete skatepark. The vision for the site includes comprehensive landscaping, new seating areas, and a dedicated kiosk featuring public toilets, turning the area into a vibrant community hub.

The council will soon be inviting local residents, skaters, and community stakeholders to help shape the final look of the park. A series of public engagement events will take place in April to showcase the initial concept designs and gather vital feedback before the plans are submitted for planning permission. Further information will be shared via the council’s website and social media channels in the coming weeks.

Bob Porter, Director of Place at Thanet District Council, said: “I am so pleased that we have secured Betongpark for this project. As someone who is passionate about creating spaces where our young people can thrive, build connections and get active, I know how valuable this will be to the Margate community.

“This isn’t just about rails and ramps; it’s about building a space where people of all ages can come together, strengthen relationships, gain skills, and feel proud of their local area. I can’t wait to see the designs and hear what our residents think.”

Daryl Nobbs, Director of Betongpark, said: “Betongpark is excited to get started on public engagement and detailed design for the new skatepark in Margate, ahead of construction starting later this year.

“We bring with us 14 years of experience building concrete skateparks across the UK and Norway, including many in coastal areas.

“As a team of lifelong skaters, we’re pleased to be building the new park on the site of the former DIY skatepark, working closely alongside a strong local scene.

“Our team is building on the great work done by the local skate community and council over the last five years. Their tenacity, commitment to quality and dedication is truly inspiring!

“Once built, the new concrete skatepark will be one of the UK’s best, set in a beautiful location overlooking the waterfront.

“The concept design includes a range of street and transition-focused elements across a vast site, to provide something for everyone.”

Nic Powley, owner of Margate’s Skate Pharm shop, and head of Margate Skateboard Club CIC, said: “I’m delighted that Betongpark has been awarded this contract and am looking forward to seeing how, with input from the skateboarding and wider community, the final design will shape up. It has been a long journey to get to this point and it’s exciting to know this project will now materialise for the community and the town.”

Following the upcoming engagement period, the designs will be refined and a formal planning application submitted. The application will include an independent design review. Construction is expected to begin on-site as soon as planning approval is granted.
