Your stories, your museum: planning for the Clock House

Thanet District Council is inviting local people and visitors to indicate which Ramsgate stories they would like to see in the Clock House Museum. The aim is to find fresh, exciting ways to tell Ramsgate’s unique stories. Doing so will bring the town’s maritime history to life, using creative displays and interactive storytelling. This work is supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The council wants people to see how the inside of the museum might look, and the themes being considered for the exhibits, at two informal drop-in events:

  • Westwood Cross Community Hub: 11.30am to 4.30pm, today: Wednesday 18 February
  • Ramsgate Market, High Street, Ramsgate: 9am to 1pm, Friday 27 February

After the sessions, the feedback will be reviewed, and will help shape the plans for the museum’s collections.

Cllr Kristian Bright, Cabinet Member for Parking, Tourism and Culture, said: “The Clock House is an iconic part of Ramsgate’s heritage, and we want to ensure its future reflects the vibrant history and identity of our community. Personally, I am excited to see how we can bring the museum’s artefacts to life in a way that resonates with everyone, from lifelong residents to new visitors.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to engage with the project at an early stage of the development of the internal space.  This is a chance to tell us what stories you want to hear, and how you would like those stories to be shown.  This information will help shape how the museum’s exhibition space develops.  I encourage everyone to come along to one of the in-person sessions and get involved.”

Following a district-wide Strategic Museums Review in 2023, the council has commissioned specialist consultants Haley Sharpe to produce a plan for how the museum will tell Ramsgate’s stories. The museum artefacts are currently in safe storage.
