From Monday 13 April 2026, some households in Thanet will see changes to their waste and recycling collection. Most households in Thanet already use this system. Approximately 27,000 extra properties will see changes to their collections. For more information, visit our Simpler Recycling page.

Here are some tips to help you recycle effectively:

  • Rinse and dry: remove food and liquids; soggy paper or greasy containers can ruin an entire batch.
  • Keep it loose: never bag your recycling. Toss items directly into the bin so machines can sort them.
  • Size matters: avoid tossing in items smaller than a credit card (like loose caps or shredded paper), as they fall through the machinery.
  • Screw caps on: to recycle plastic bottle caps, squeeze the air out of the bottle and screw the cap back on tight.
  • No ‘tanglers’: keep plastic bags, bubble wrap and cords out of the bin, they jam the sorting gears.
  • Check the top: for pizza boxes, recycle the clean lid and trash or compost the greasy bottom.
  • When in doubt, toss it out: avoid ‘wish-cycling.’ If you aren’t sure it’s accepted, put it in the rubbish to prevent contamination.

The mascots are dressed as recyclable items with sad faces, including a white carton, a green bottle, a red tub, a blue spray bottle, and a cardboard tube. Several of the mascots and the people are holding bright green signs that read 'RESCUE ME! RECYCLE'.
