Berth replacement update

The project to replace berth 4/5 at the Port of Ramsgate is to be delayed until early 2021. This is because the council as the planning authority has determined that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is needed in relation to the replacement of the berth.

The proposed work constitutes permitted development as described in Schedule 2, Part 18 Class A of the The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015.  As such a prior planning approval application for the project was submitted to the council as the Local Planning Authority in August.

As the council is the applicant the decision on the prior approval application must be made by members of the planning committee rather than officers.

A contract has been awarded to the contractor BAM Nuttall Ltd for the replacement works and will involve the reuse of one of the pontoons that are currently moored in the Royal Harbour at Ramsgate.

The council has a contractual obligation to replace berth 4/5 which is at the end of its operational life.
