Community Day comes to Broadstairs this summer

Thanet District Council is inviting people to a free day of family fun, wellbeing and safety this summer. The Community Day will happen at the Memorial Recreation Ground in Broadstairs on Wednesday 29 July 2026.

Open to the public from 11am to 3pm, the event brings together two popular community initiatives: the Thanet Games and Knowledge is Power. By combining the two, the council aims to deliver a bigger, more cohesive experience for the whole family.

The active zone of the event features the Thanet Games, designed to encourage physical activity and support positive mental wellbeing. A wide variety of local sports clubs and wellness providers will deliver free taster sessions throughout the day. Attendees of all ages and abilities can try out new ways to stay active, with everything from yoga to sports coaching on offer.

Alongside these activities, Knowledge is Power offers an interactive look at emergency awareness. Representatives from Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution will lead live demonstrations. Families can chat with the crews, look around the emergency vehicles, and learn vital skills like sea safety, road awareness and life-saving first aid.

In addition, partners including St John Ambulance, Oasis Domestic Abuse Service and Kooth will share advice on personal safety, healthy relationships, mental health, and drug and alcohol use.

Cllr Heather Keen, Cabinet Member for Community at Thanet District Council, said: “We are excited to host this collaborative event in Broadstairs. It’s an opportunity for parents and young people to learn together, and discover new activities that boost their wellbeing or improve their ability to make well-informed, good decisions around their personal safety.”

The event is timed to run alongside the Broadstairs Water Gala. The Memorial Recreation Ground sits directly between Broadstairs railway station and Viking Bay, providing an ideal, accessible stop-off point for families walking down to the seafront.

Entry is completely free, and a timetable of the day’s activities is available on the Community Safety team’s Facebook page.
