Support for people arriving from Ukraine, help from partner organisations, and local guidance

Since the war broke out in Ukraine, we have seen an enormous level of generosity from people across the district wanting to offer help or support to those affected. As a council, we are actively working with partners to provide support and assistance for Ukrainian refugees arriving in Thanet. We want to ensure they receive the warmest welcome to the district and all the support they need to settle safely into our community.

There is further guidance on Kent County Council’s website.

A number of organisations have set up appeals for help for those caught up in this situation. These organisations are providing humanitarian support for people in the Ukraine.

The main appeal being run by the UK’s Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) is the one the Government is encouraging people to donate to so the funds can be shared across a range of charities. You can donate and find out more about the appeal by visiting the Disaster Emergency Committee website.

The UK Government is advising people to be safe when making donations and to use registered charities, like the ones listed on this page, who are working on the ground to help those displaced by the fighting taking place in the Ukraine.

There’s a lot you can do to prepare yourself to safely support newcomers and existing communities in Thanet. For example, you could find out about how to talk about this situation in a helpful way, learn a few words in different languages, or read about the culture and history of different countries.
