Call out for volunteers to help shape the character and design of places in Thanet

Thanet District Council is inviting local people to help shape a new Design Code for Thanet.

This is a chance to positively influence future development in the district.

What is a Design Code?

A design code is a planning document that sets out specific design requirements for new development. The Thanet Design Code will be used to help decide whether development proposals are acceptable in design terms.

Local volunteers are invited to join a Community Panel to help develop a Design Code for Thanet. The aim is for the code to reflect local people’s preferences around the character and design of developments, helping to deliver buildings that have the support of local communities.

What will Community Panel members do?

Panel members will be invited to take part in two workshops, to help develop a vision and identify priorities for the Design Code. The two workshops will take place, in-person as follows:

  • Sunday 14 September, 10am to 12pm, The Yarrow Hotel, Ramsgate Road, Broadstairs CT10 1PN.
  • Sunday 23 November, 10am to 12pm, venue in Thanet to be confirmed.

Refreshments will be provided on arrival.

There will be a further opportunity for engagement, which will be online and optional.

Volunteers don’t need any specific skills or knowledge of the planning system – just some enthusiasm and an interest in improving the quality of new buildings and places across Thanet.

To ensure that the panel represents the range of communities living in Thanet, we’re hoping to recruit up to 30 members, of all backgrounds and ages (18 or over).

What will happen with the Panel’s findings?

The feedback from the workshops will help shape the Thanet Design Code. It will cover a wide range of topics from street design to building materials, energy efficiency measures to parking.

How do people apply?

Anyone who is interested can register online, where they will be asked to complete an online application.

For more information, or to request a paper copy of the application form, please call 01843 577000 or email local.plans@thanet.gov.uk

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 18 August 2025.
