Building business: how the Teenage Market is empowering Thanet’s youth
On Saturday 4 April 2026, Thanet will host the first Teenage Market of 2026. The event is happening between 10am and 5pm at Turner Contemporary, Margate CT9 1HG.
The gallery will be transformed into a hub for young entrepreneurs from across the district to showcase and sell their unique creations. There will be up to 25 stalls, with stallholders selected to ensure a varied offer. Alongside the sellers, there will be a vibrant performance space for talented young musicians.
A small number of spaces are still available for people aged 8 to 24. Anyone interested in applying to run a free stall or perform live, can apply via the Margate Teenage Market webpage.
This market builds on the success of five previous Teenage Market events, held in Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate. The Teenage Market is a platform for young people to develop business experience, showcase their creative skills and connect with their local community.
The success of the Margate Teenage Market relies on the support of local people and businesses. Businesses can show their support by displaying posters in their window.
Bob Porter, Director of Place for Thanet District Council, said: “It’s great that the Teenage Market is returning to Margate for the first event of the year. To date, over 70 young people have taken part in previous markets, collectively generating more than £10,000 in sales. These figures are incredibly encouraging and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm our young entrepreneurs pour into their businesses.”
“Beyond the financial success, I have been deeply impressed by the young peoples’ creativity and their professional approach to the markets. I would love to see a big turnout at Turner Contemporary – it’s not only a chance to celebrate their talent but also a great reason to support Margate’s businesses.”
Co-creator of The Teenage Market, Joe Barratt, said “Having seen the impact that our events have made on the lives of young people, I’m delighted that Thanet District Council is giving young people a free platform to get their businesses off the ground and showcase their creative talents.”
The Teenage Market is funded and hosted by Thanet District Council as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Funding, with support from East Kent Colleges Group and Harvey Waste.
There is a second market planned in Broadstairs on Sunday 14 June. Any young people interested in registering for a free stall, or to perform on the day, can apply on the Teenage Market website.
