The Armed Forces Covenant
The Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise to ensure that those who serve or have served in the UK Armed Forces, and their families:
- Are treated fairly.
- Are not disadvantaged in their daily lives due to their service
It also allows for special provisions for those who have made significant sacrifices, such as the bereaved and injured.
The Armed Forces Act 2021
The Armed Forces Act 2021 further incorporated the Covenant into law to prevent disadvantages faced by the Armed Forces Community.
This legislation aims to:
- Increase awareness.
- Improve the delivery of the Covenant in key areas fundamental to the well-being of military families.
The aims of the Armed Forces Community Covenant
- Encourage local communities to support the Armed Forces Community in their areas, and to raise public understanding and awareness of issues affecting the armed forces community.
- Recognise and remember the sacrifices faced by the Armed Forces Community.
- Encourage activities which help to integrate the Armed Forces Community into local life.
- Encourage the Armed Forces Community to help and support the wider community, whether through participation in events and joint projects, or other forms of engagement.

About the scheme
The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme encompasses bronze, silver and gold awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the armed forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.
Thanet District Council is a proud Silver Award Holder.
The award follows a pledge to support the Armed Forces community, as part of the Armed Forces Covenant. This means TDC recognises the value that serving personnel, both regular and reservists, veterans and military families contribute to our business and our country.
Thanet District Council aspires to achieve gold award status in the future.
