Schools out for Summer!

Why not take a look at the ‘Pollution Patrol’ website, parents /guardians might enjoy using some of the activities within the website with their young ones during the school holidays.

Here’s what the website has to offer and some further information:

Children Encouraged to Become Pollution Patrol Advocates

Air pollution is a problem that can affect everyone, with children being particularly at risk as their bodies are still developing. To encourage children and their parents to act as advocates for improving air quality, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has received funding from DEFRA’s Air Quality Grants to produce the KentAir Air Pollution Digital Resource for primary schools in Kent and Medway.

Immersive resource to reduce air pollution around schools

The free digital learning resource, the Pollution Patrol, includes an immersive 360o story where children can adventure through the fictional town of Sooting; and interactive games that educate and inform children about what air and air pollution is. The Pollution Patrol provides practical and curriculum-linked solutions for in school lessons, and fun at home learning for children, and their parents to reduce their impact on air pollution, firstly in relation to travel to school and around the wider community.

Air pollution in Kent and Medway with the Pollution Patrol

Air pollution has many sources with some of the most significant being traffic, factories, domestic use of fuels for heating, and farming activities. Though the air quality in Kent and Medway is generally better than at any time since before the Industrial Revolution, it can still affect everyone’s health. Government statistics estimate that air pollution in the UK reduces life expectancy with 7-8 months on average and comes with an associated cost of up to £20 billion each year.

While legislation and policies aim to minimise the impact of air pollution on health and the environment, the wider community in Kent and Medway are encouraged to take their own steps in improving the local air quality. Have a look at the Pollution Patrol on https://pollutionpatrol.org.uk/ to learn more about air pollution and to gain practical resources to reduce your
own impacts
